I have decided to attempt a 21 Day Sugar Detox. Some of the biggest factors were these: Sugar can aggravate myopia and migraines, it can increase the risk of several types of cancers, and contributes to weight gain, to name a few reasons. See http://nancyappleton.com/141-reasons-sugar-ruins-your-health/ for even more reasons. I am going to be honest about how I feel going through these 21 Days, and about how the recipes I try taste to me. I will try to take more pictures in the future.
Day 1
No crazy cravings, but I have a lot of self-doubt that I can last for 21 days. The longest that I have gone without chocolate is about 17 hours, as far as I can remember. I would like to think that I am strong willed enough to stick to this commitment, but I think that it will be hard to not miss some hidden sugars. Today I had an Emergen-C, which has sugar, but I will keep going. I had scrambled eggs for breakfast, and for lunch I had roll-ups of low sodium sliced turkey, tomato, spinach and sliced provolone cheese. I am thankful for the myfitnesspal app, which has helped me monitor my portion sizes.
Day 2
Still no cravings. I am pretty excited that I (almost) made it through Day 1. I almost cheated last night by using store-brought broth but Chad suggested we do tacos instead of Mexican soup. I put all the ingredients (chicken, avocado, tomato, onion and cheese) in a bowl, and really enjoyed my dinner. Today I had roll-ups for lunch and for dinner there were taco. We went to a pizza place for a birthday party, and I was surrounded by pizza and beer. It wasn't as challenging as I thought it would be to resist, and I was surprised how supportive and non-judgmental the other people at our table were when I only ordered hot tea and explained the detox. I am thankful for good people, especially my husband, who is wonderful.
Day 3
I thought I would crave candy, chocolate really, but instead it's bread on my mind. Specifically the clam chowder and bread bowl from Disneyland. I kept myself distracted with work, munched on baby carrots and drank Tazo passion tea. After work, I tried to go for a two mile run, but my legs felt really heavy and I just didn't have the usual energy that I have in a run. I hope that will change. Two weeks ago I ran 9.3 miles in a 15k. I know I have only been doing 4 mile runs a few times a week since then, but this was the most lethargic I've felt running in a long time, and it was a struggle to finish the 1 mile. Tomorrow I plan to add a sweet potato, which is technically against the rules, but is okay for "training" level-one folks, I think. I hope that will help.
For dinner, I tried this recipe for Slow Cooker Balsamic Chicken: http://paleoaholic.com/paleo/paleo-slow-cooker-balsamic-chicken/ . I was surprised that there was no water added to the recipe, so I added a fourth of a cup of water, and added an extra fourth of a cup of balsamic vinegar. The meat was moist and fell completely off the bone. The flavor was good, but simple. Maybe more salt would make it spark? I am not sure, but I think I would use this recipe again.
After dinner, I went to Sprouts and got a few things from the store, and decided to make pancake batter for breakfast tomorrow morning. I used this recipe: http://www.primalpalate.com/paleo-recipe/almond-flour-pancakes/ The recipe was easy to follow. I decided to make a couple test pancakes as a dessert for tonight, and they smelled divine. They were good, I suppose, but I was not excited about the flavor. They would be much better with maple syrup, but alas... This was my first time using almond flour, and it seemed a bit gritty. I wonder if that is normal? Today I am thankful for my nephew's giggles.
